Mondial Delay (16/04/2025) was an artistic experiment and exhibition in which one hundred emerging artists each began with the exact same object: a cardboard box measuring 40×40×30 cm. From this uniform starting point, unique artworks were created, exhibited, and auctioned during the event. Each artist determined the starting bid for their own work. Any piece that failed to sell was ruthlessly destroyed on the spot by an acrobat, in full view of the audience, within a specially constructed destruction ring infused with theatrical flair. The auction and the destruction occurred simultaneously. Buyers and those who lost a bid could collect a certificate from a central registrar’s chair. This orchestrated tension between value and impermanence, between possession and loss, became a key part of the experience. The scenography of the exhibition explicitly referenced package pickup points: white fluorescent lighting, towering display racks and stacks of boxes underscored the banality of consumption. Visitors could consult a curated catalogue featuring all participating artists and their works. Mondial Delay posed fundamental questions about the role of art in a market driven society. What happens when artistic value is tied directly to sales? What does it mean when art is threatened with destruction? And how do young artists navigate the paradox between recognition and commercial appeal? The project brought together established names and emerging talents, offering newcomers a first and accessible entry point into a professional artistic network, in a setting that was as absurd as it was confrontational.
